Democrats, Republicans Disagree on Effects of Energy Use · Environmental Management & Energy News · Environmental Leader.

Generational and political gaps exist in connecting personal energy use with living conditions in other countries, according to new U.S. consumer research conducted by EnviroMedia Social Marketing.

According to the national telephone survey of 1,022 Americans, 43 percent disagree and 49 percent agree with the statement, “My personal energy use affects the health and living conditions of people in poor, developing countries.”

The study shows nearly three out of five Republicans (58 percent) disagree with the statement while slightly more than one out of three (37 percent) express responsibility for the effects of personal energy use. This contrasts sharply with Democrats’ views, where 28 percent disagree with the statement and almost two out of three (64 percent) express responsibility.

The new research shows 60 percent of 18- to 34-year-olds believe their personal energy use affects others globally.

When asked “Is coal a renewable energy source?” 25 percent of Americans said yes and another 15 percent said they didn’t know.

This is so very sad to hear. At least the younger generation seems to get the point.

Lamb Energy, Bethel Heights Vineyard Install Solar Power Systems, SAS Adds Second Solar Farm · Environmental Leader · Green Business, Sustainable Business, and Green Strategy News for Corporate Sustainability Executives.

While Lamb Energy has added a solar roof array to its headquarters in California, and Oregon’s Bethel Heights Vineyard has installed a solar-electric system, SAS has added a second solar farm at the company’s N.C. headquarters campus.

Solar energy solutions provider Lamb Energy has installed a solar roof array using panels from Sharp at the company’s headquarters in Riverside, California. The 17.5-kW system will power about 60 percent of the building’s annual energy consumption, and prevent the emission of about 19.5 metric tons of CO2 into the atmosphere each year.

DOE, NREL Show How to Cut Energy Use 50% in Commercial Buildings, Hospitals · Environmental Leader · Green Business, Sustainable Business, and Green Strategy News for Corporate Sustainability Executives.

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and its National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) have released two technical reports that provide recommendations on how to achieve 50 percent energy savings in new and existing large office buildings and large hospitals. The studies were conducted by NREL’s Commercial Buildings Group, under the direction of DOE’s Building Technologies Program.

DOE NREL has supported alternative energy sources for a long time. I worked with them 10 years ago on a geothermal project for a small community in Modoc County, California.

PG&E forced the California State Legislature to cap net metering for residential solar power at 2.5%. We will soon be at the limit, so that no new homes installing solar power will be eligible to receive this benefit. There goes that incentive to lower GHG emissions and use alternative energy out the window. The State has proposed raising the cap to 10%, but PG&E has expressed a dissenting view of that proposal. Is it time to call your representatives to force this issue?
